Big Dave: An Inspiration Giving Out Free Hugs and High Fives

David Sylvester

I had the extreme pleasure to meet David Sylvester from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, while visiting Belfast, Ireland in the Fall 2019.  We met in the hotel restaurant, where we were all staying.  It had been a long day of visiting the city, touring the Titanic Museum and getting a glimpse in the distance of Titanic Studios (Game of Thrones Filming Location).  A little late in the evening, it was time to grab a bite to eat and while waiting for my travel partners, I struck up a conversation with the man sitting next to me – he had a warm handshake and kind smile.  David shared with me about his mission to bring kindness and compassion to the world after a devastating loss in his life…

A bereaved survivor, David was tranformed by his loss and became a beacon of hope – giving hugs and high fives while traveling in over 37 countries and all 50 states. Connecting with as many people as he could along the way. David adopted a mission to enhance the world one hug, one high-five and one interaction at a time. In working toward that end, he has continued through the pandemic searching for smiles. David Sylvester demonstrates human super abilities of compassion, kindness and hope.  Let’s all follow David’s Super Hero lead to – hug more, high-five, and provide kindness to one another with a genuine smile! @thehumanhigh5#SmileWithBigDave
